Don R. Gilman, P.E. TEES Assistant Research Engineer and Manager, SE Group
Mr. Gilman holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M University. He has been active in all aspects of software development since the early 1980's. His portfolio includes nine published computer games with over 1.5 million units sold, the Harpoon air/naval computer wargame, a Microsoft Case Study, and dozens of custom applications for customers including: the US EPA, US DOE, US Navy, Canadian Department of National Defense, Australian Department of Defense, Northrop Grumman, Aon Insurance and Exxon Oil. He was one of the first to receive his license as a Professional Engineer in Software Engineering in 2000. |

The SE Group works closely with the Building Modeling Group and the Building Codes Group. They comprise of Mechanical Engineers and Architects, aided by graduate students in Architecture and Mechanical Engineering. |
The Texas Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) is a partnership of communities, industry and institutions across the state that work together to solve problems and promote the economic development of Texas. TEES is the engineering research agency of the State of Texas and a member of The Texas A&M University System.
Today, with approximately 2,000 students, the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University is one of the largest of its kind in the United States,. The three departments in the college - architecture, construction science, and landscape architecture and urban planning - are each fully accredited at the highest possible level and together offer 12 degree programs including doctorates in Architecture and Urban and Regional Sciences. This system takes building and community data (19 models presently) and calculates weather normalized energy savings estimates. Then it allocates power plant pollution reductions to those projects.
The currently deployed version was an “Engineering” flavored deliverable that is in need of a UI tune up. It is built with 3 tiers, with the simulation occurring in a VB.NET layer wrapped around legacy compiled simulations hosted on AMD64 “Calc Engines” Presently we are adding six new models to the existing code and have a parallel project to rework the UI to make it more attractive, stateful (i.e. user can save their work), and helpful.

Version 1 was approximately 3700 student hours (design to deployment) and over 3000 additional staff hours. It has been roughly calculated that the engineering models required up to 6 staff years of effort to configure and script before the SEG put them into the calculator.
A future version is intended to feature GIS based output showing single and summarized county emissions data.
Other projects include the analysis of utility and building data in an effort to optimize control settings to provide the best comfort at the lowest cost to the building occupants. |

We follow a hybrid approach where we do Agile (Test Driven) Development, SCRUM tasking in the actual shop. Since we are also TEES and Engineers, we also follow a lighter weight Software Engineering methodology that includes: requirements, specification, design. estimations, scheduling, and risk management.
