The 9th International Conference for Enhanced Building Operations (ICEBO) is hosted by the Energy Systems Laboratory at Texas A&M University and co-hosted by Austin Energy. ICEBO is the leading annual international event dedicated to enhancing the performance of buildings by increasing their energy efficiency and productivity and minimizing their environmental impacts. ICEBO Is Truly International

The international approach of ICEBO makes it unique. The conferences alternate between USA and international sites. ICEBO 2009 will be held in Austin, Texas. Other recent venues include ICEBO 2008 in Berlin, Germany; ICEBO 2007, San Francisco, California; ICEBO 2006, Shenzhen, China; ICEBO 2005, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; ICEBO 2004, Paris, France. ICEBO 2010 will be co-hosted by Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research and will be held in Safat, Kuwait.

Why ICEBO Was Started

The annual ICEBO conferences were initiated in 2001 by the Energy Systems Laboratory at Texas A&M University to address a growing problem. The energy efficiency investments in existing commercial buildings rarely met their projected energy and cost savings. The conferences showed that savings of 20% or more were achievable by careful audits that identify the most cost-effective investments, by ensuring that new equipment and controls operate correctly, by training the building engineers, and by monitoring the results. The scope of the conferences has expanded to new buildings and residential buildings, where these commissioning practices are equally important. The initial focus on a building’s current operations—which may differ from its original design—remains important to ICEBO.

Conference Attendees

The conferences bring together experts in both building energy research and building operations. Through technical sessions, symposiums, seminars, forums and tabletop exhibits, ICEBO gathers and distributes information on the newest energy technology, applications, and products from throughout the world. The agenda is expanding to include the environmental benefits of enhanced building operations, including the reduction of NOx to meet U.S. air quality standards and the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In these areas, ICEBO works closely with the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers, the U.S. Green Building Council, the Building Commissioning Association, the California Commissioning Collaborative, and others.
